Jakarta, DailyFastNews.Com Indonesia - Ukraine
and its allies are discussing providing long-range missiles to be used by
Russia to prevent the bombing of Ukrainian cities. The talks between Ukraine
and its allies were disclosed by President Volodymyr Zelensky's advisor
Mykhailo Podolyak to Ukrainian television.
Reuters reports these
discussions add to a long list of military weapons that could potentially
strengthen Ukraine against Russian troops. Previously, western countries had
promised to provide tanks. Ukraine has also submitted a request for fighter
jets.
To reduce Russia's key
weapon, namely artillery, we need missiles that can destroy their
arsenal," Podolyak told Ukraine's Freedom television network, quoted by
Reuters on Sunday (29/1/2023).
He said that there are
about 100 Russian artillery warehouses on the Crimean Peninsula which are now
controlled by Russia. "Therefore, negotiations [on long-range missiles]
are ongoing. These negotiations are now being accelerated," said Podolyak.
Speaking separately, Zelenskiy said that Ukraine wanted to prevent further
Russian attacks on urban areas affecting civilian populations. "Ukraine
needs long-range missiles to prevent invaders from using their missiles to
destroy Ukrainian cities from afar," he said.
Zelenskiy said that
Ukraine needs an ATACMS missile made in the United States which has a range of
297 kilometers. The US has so far refused to grant access to these weapons. Meanwhile,
the Ukrainian air force denied reports stating that it would get 24 fighter
jets from allied nations. El Pais, the Spanish media, previously quoted the
spokesman for the Ukrainian air force Yuri Ihnat about the request for two F-16
squadrons made by Lockheed Martin. To Babel, Ihnat said his comments were
misinterpreted. "Ukraine is only at the negotiation stage. The fighter jet
models and numbers are still being discussed," said Ihnat. Ihnat stated
that the F16 was the best choice as a replacement for the defense equipment
left by the Soviet Union which is now being used by Ukrainian troops.
